6 Ways to Use Your French Press! Every Coffee Lover Must Have!

*I received a free El Gato Mato French Press for free in exchange for an honest review on my blog. Opinions expressed below are 100% my own.*

I love coffee! I love the taste, I love the smell and I will drink it pretty much anyway. I drink it so much that I’m always looking for better coffee making equipment on The Full Moon Cafe. I’ve even been turning for the perfect coffee machine. I have looked everywhere, in stores, through friends and even online through sites that are similar to Identifyr. I have been searching for the perfect machine to help fill that coffee cup shape in my heart. I loved coffee a lot before getting this equipment, but you can only imagine how I feel about it now. I even went as far as looking into something like the Neptune coffee blog, to learn more interesting coffee facts. I know they will come in handy one day, plus I have found many uses of coffee, other than having it as my daily drink. There’s so much you can find out just by researching into the world of coffee. Sometimes I like it black, and sometimes I love the fancy creamers. I think the only way I will not drink my coffee is if it has peppermint in it. YUCK! I recently fell in love with this El Gato Malo French Press. There are so many ways this French Press can be used and I think I got a little carried away with it the past few days. 😛

First, let me tell you a little about this awesome French Press then I can share all the fun you can have with it. The El Gato Malo French Press is a stainless steel french press. I love this more than the glass for many reasons, one being that it helps to keep your coffee warmer longer than the glass since it is double insulated walled. Another is that it is more durable, the glass is too easy to break if you drop it, or with the mixture of hot and cold. If you decide you want an iced coffee, you can easily set this in the freezer to cool down. And with this French Press being Stainless Steel, there is no rusting! The size is perfect on the go, great for camping trips too. This requires no electricity, so even when the power goes out you can enjoy some coffee. Cleaning up is super easy, you can either clean quickly by hand or toss it in the dishwasher. Now let’s get to the fun stuff….

I have tried the El Gato Malo French Press for both coffee and teas and I have even used it as a milk frother. So much to do with one product and so much goodness that comes from it! With the holidays here you can now fix some delicious drinks for family and friends or give this gift to that coffee lover you may know. The El Gato Malo French Press is so easy to use too, here are the simple directions before we get into the different drinks.

How to use the El Gato Malo French Press:

What you need: coarse ground coffee, warm or hot water, and a spoon.

  1. Pour your coffee grounds into the cylinder. (How much is based on how strong you would like your coffee or teas).
  2. Pour hot water (you do not want boiling water) into the cylinder, over the coffee.
  3. Stir your coffee and water with a spoon, or you can stir by pumping the plunger at the top. I like to stir it with a spoon.
  4. Let your coffee brew for 4 minutes.
  5. Fill the rest of the cylinder with the remaining hot water, but leave about an inch from the top.
  6. Put the plunger on top of the cylinder, turn the lid so that it blocks the pour spout.
  7. Slowly and firmly press down on the plunger until it reaches the bottom of the coffee press.
  8. When the plunger reaches the bottom, you can turn the lid to open the spout and pour.

See how easy, the whole process is less than 10 minutes! Another awesome use you can use this French Press for is frothing your milk for your cappuccino’s and lattes. It is even easier than brewing your favorite coffee and teas. And if you do not have a milk frother, this is a great product to use instead. How to Froth Milk in a French Press:

img_29301What you need: Your french press and choice of milk warm (dairy, almond, coconut, etc.)

  1. Pour your choice of warm milk into the cylinder. You only need about 1/3 – 1/2 of the cylinder full.
  2. Put the plunger on the top, make sure the top is turned to cover the spout. Then press the plunger up and down for 20 – 25 seconds, until the milk is how you want it.

I love frothing my milk this way more than using another frother, the milk comes out so beautiful and perfectly fluffy. 🙂 *Since you can not see through the French Press, I poured my milk into a jar for you to see.*
Here are some favorite recipes that I tried out with my El Gato Malo French Press.

How to make Cold Brew Coffee in a French Press:

img_29621What you need: Coffee, hot/warm water, ice

  1. Add desired amount of coffee to the press.
  2. Add warm water.
  3. Stir water and coffee grinds.
  4. Press down the plunger on the top until it presses to the bottom.
  5. Let sit for 12- 24 hours on the counter or set in the fridge.
  6. Pour into glass, add glass and enjoy!

Cold Brew is great for summer, or if you are like me, I love iced coffee any time of the year. You can even add creamers to the iced coffee, or different flavors. I love using the French Vanilla Coffee as my cold brew.

How to make a French Press Latte:

img_29331What you need: Coffee, warm/hot water, 1 cup of milk.

  1. Put desired amount of coffee into the bottom of the press.
  2. Pour warm/hot water over the coffee beans and stir (again, I use a spoon to stir, you can use the press to stir if you want).
  3. Press the plunger down and let your coffee brew for 4 minutes.
  4. If you have a milk frother, this is perfect timing to warm your milk and froth it. If you use your press, I used it before I did my coffee and let my milk sit out while I waited for my coffee to brew.
  5. Fill your mug 1/2 way with coffee, Fill the rest with the liquid of the milk, and add some of the foam to the top.
  6. You can add some toppings like cinnamon to the top if you like.

How to make Vietnamese Styled Coffee:

  1. Put the desired amount of coffee in the french press.
  2. Add warm/hot water to press and stir.
  3. Let brew for 4 minutes.
  4. While your coffee is brewing, add 1 TBSP of condensed milk to the bottom of the glass.
  5. Press down the plunger at the top to press down the coffee grinds. Then pour in a glass over the condensed milk.
  6. Add some ice, and add more condensed milk if you choose. Stir, or let your guest stir and enjoy!

I absolutely love the caramel color to this drink. Some may not like the condensed milk, but I do love to sip this some mornings after taking my little one to school.

How to make Matcha Green Tea Lattes:

img_29561What you need: Matcha Green Tea, warm milk (your choice), sweetener (if you choose).

  1. Add 1/2 tsp of Match Green Tea to the French Press. (or your desired amount)
  2. Add your warm milk on top.
  3. Use the plunger top to press up and down 20 – 30 seconds until it becomes frothy.
  4. Press the plunger to the bottom, Pour into glass or mug.

I love green tea, but the matcha I have had a hard time finding a way that I liked. Match Green Tea is strong but having it this way as a latte was not too bad. I suggest using some flavored milk like vanilla coconut or almond milk. * Let me apologize that my Matcha Green Tea Latte did not turn out so green…it could have been the lighting in my kitchen too some. These rainy days have NOT helped. *

How to make loose leaf teas in French Press:

What you need: Favorite loose leaf tea, warm/hot water

  1. Pour your loose leaf teas into the press. (How much is based on the packaging of your tea).
  2. Pour hot/warm water into the press, over the tea. Stir with spoon or pump.
  3. Let steep for 4 minutes.
  4. Put the plunger on top of the cylinder, turn the lid so that it blocks the pour spout.
  5. Slowly and firmly press down on the plunger until it reaches the bottom of the press.
  6. When the plunger reaches the bottom, you can turn the lid to open the spout and pour.

I love tea just as much as I love coffee, I hate when I have to make my own tea bags to steep my tea. This process is fast and tastes so much better. I do not add sweeteners to my teas usually if I do honey is a great choice.

*Some helpful hints when using your French Press*

  • When using your French Press as a milk frother, or with the Match Green Tea Lattes, your milk will double in size when frothing. So be sure to not fill the French Press to the top with milk,1/3 to 1/2 way is fine.
  • Be sure to check the top when you put it on the press, turn the top so that the sprout is covered. Or you may have hot coffee, tea or milk all over your counter.
  • Be careful because your drinks may be hot! Many do not need this reminder, but I just want to be sure you are being safe.
